Emberiza pusilla - Little Bunting - a new species for Serbia
The bird was found during the regular fall birding, near the pond Jezero (Stanišić, Bačka) on the November 11th 2009. It was caught in ornithological net by Dejan Đapić. Identification was confirmed by ornithologist from Vojvodina Society for Research and Protection of Birds and "Riparia" Association of Naturalist - Antun Žuljević, Márton Ferenc and Szekeres Ottó. Though this species resembles the Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus), it was obvious that the bird had paler legs, smaller beak and remarkable black lateral spots.
Listen to the bird song:
The Little Bunting (Emberiza pusilla), is a passerine bird. It belongs to the bunting and American sparrow family (Emberizidae), a group separated by most modern authors from the true finches (Fringillidae). The bird is 12-13.5 cm in length. The Little Bunting breeds across the taiga of the far northeast of Europe and northern Asia. It is migratory, wintering in the subtropics in northern India, southern China and the northern parts of south-east Asia. Only rare individuals spend winter in western Europe or other parts of Europe. Since now it has never been noted in Serbia.
